Economic Agenda for Groningen and North Drenthe Presented

On Thursday, March 6, facilitator Jakob Klompien presented the draft economic agenda for Groningen and North Drenthe. The agenda was developed through collaboration between the national government and the municipalities and provinces of Groningen and Drenthe.

Part of Nij Begun

The economic agenda is part of the package of measures following the parliamentary inquiry into gas extraction: a Nij Begun for Groningen and North Drenthe. The agenda serves as an investment framework for thirty years. For the economic agenda, the cabinet demonstrates its long-term commitment with €100 million per year for the next 30 years, and a one-time boost of €250 million.

Input from Residents and Experts

The content of the economic agenda arises from numerous conversations with entrepreneurs, residents, experts, and officials. Online, people were able to give their opinions in various participation rounds, there were expert sessions, large meetings, and discussions with young people. All contributors agreed on the main goal of the agenda: to stimulate a future-proof economy in a healthy and attractive region.

Programs and Themes
The economic agenda focuses on a good quality of life, housing, and working in the region. There are plans for employment, training opportunities, and economic future perspectives. The agenda is not a list of projects and programs to be financed. Instead, it invests in broad, generic programs and projects as well as specific themes.

The generic investments are for:

  • Education, knowledge, and the labor market
  • Space for business activities
  • Digitalization
  • Profiling and positioning of the region

The themes in which the economic agenda invests:

  • Sustainable energy
  • Health
  • Agriculture
  • Industry
  • Leisure economy

Future-Proof

When making choices for investments from the economic agenda, there is still a lot of flexibility. It is not yet predictable in which fields, sectors, and innovations economic growth will occur in the next ten, twenty, or even thirty years. The agenda takes this into account, allowing for investments in promising themes or sectors of the future.

Contributing Thoughts

View the economic agenda on the website of Nij Begun. Through www.stemvanprovinciegroningen.nl, everyone can give their opinion on this draft agenda until April 24. After that, the final version will be established. Later in 2025, the implementation plan for the economic agenda will follow.
