Suspect arrested for hit-and-run after collision in Katwijk

Gebied: Katwijk

On Friday, February 14, the police arrested a 32-year-old man from Leiden. He is suspected of fleeing on the evening of February 13 after being involved in multiple collisions with a van. In one of these collisions, a 25-year-old cyclist from Katwijk was seriously injured.

On the evening of February 13, around 7:00 PM, the police received the first report that a van had hit the guardrail of the N206 multiple times on the road from Leiden to Katwijk. At the Katwijk exit, the driver ignored a red traffic light around 7:10 PM and drove into the intersection of Zeeweg and Callaoweg. A cyclist from Katwijk, who was riding on the bike path at that moment, was hit by the van and was seriously injured. However, the driver of the van did not stop and drove off. Shortly thereafter, the driver was involved in another collision on the N206 and continued driving. Not long after, a passerby found the van in a ditch on Kooltuinweg. The injured cyclist was urgently transported to the hospital.

Traffic accident experts from the Traffic Team came to the scene for investigation. On Friday, February 14, the 32-year-old man from Leiden was arrested as a suspect. The suspect has been detained for questioning by the detective and is under full restrictions. This means he may only contact his lawyer. The police and the Public Prosecution Service are therefore cautious in providing further information.
