More Affordable Housing in Caribbean Netherlands

In 2024, more social rental homes were added on Bonaire and Saba, and homes were renovated on St. Eustatius. Rental costs in the social sector decreased across all islands. This is stated in the 2nd Progress Report of the Policy Agenda for Housing and Spatial Planning for the Caribbean Netherlands, which Minister Mona Keijzer sent to the House of Representatives today.

Through collaboration between the ministry, the islands, and other parties, important steps have been taken towards affordable housing and improved living conditions on Bonaire, St. Eustatius, and Saba.

Bonaire: affordable housing and sustainable construction

In 2024, significant work was done on the Housing Deal Bonaire, which will deliver 1700 homes by 2030. € 2 million has been allocated for 200 new homes, of which two-thirds fall into the affordable category. Nature conservation is a priority in the construction process.

St. Eustatius: more future-proof homes

On St. Eustatius, 20 social rental homes have been renovated, and € 1 million has been allocated for another 20 homes. Solar panels have been installed on 13 homes to reduce energy costs. The ministry has also allocated € 1.25 million for the construction of 36 social rental homes.

Saba: progress in social housing construction

On Saba, approximately 50 affordable homes will be built by 2030. The Under the Hill 2 project has produced 18 social rental homes. € 1 million from the Housing Fund will be used to expand the housing stock.

Collaboration for the future

The Spatial Development Program assists in the sustainable development of the islands. Improving living standards and combating poverty remain key objectives. The government and the islands are working on a renewed agenda for 2026-2030.
