Traffic Records in 2024: Minister Madlener Takes Action

In 2024, the Dutch roads were historically busy due to high traffic congestion. This is evident from figures from Rijkswaterstaat. Many people get in the car at the same time. Minister Barry Madlener (Infrastructure and Water Management) today launches the Spitsvrij campaign, urging people to drive less often during peak hours.

In 2024, traffic congestion on national highways increased by 12% compared to 2023. Traffic congestion is the length of traffic jams multiplied by the duration of the jams. Last year, 77% of traffic jams occurred during peak hours. Accidents accounted for 10% of the jams, and 6% were due to planned construction work. This trend will continue in 2025. Even if the traffic volume during peak hours remains the same, the congestion will increase due to significant necessary roadworks that are planned.

Driving Off-Peak to Reduce Traffic

Tuesday and Thursday are the days with the most traffic jams. Driving off-peak is a good way to reduce congestion. Not everyone can drive outside peak hours, but those who can contribute to alleviating peak traffic problems.

Driving off-peak means traveling outside peak hours from 7:00 to 9:00 and from 16:30 to 18:00. For example, starting from home later on Tuesday or Thursday can help.

Minister Madlener: “Traffic jams in our country are more than just an annoyance: they cost us time and money, and they create unsafe situations. By consciously choosing when we travel, we can significantly reduce congestion. It requires a change in mindset, but the benefits are substantial. Together, we can make a difference. That’s why we are launching the Spitsvrij campaign today.”

About the Campaign

With the Spitsvrij campaign, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management aims to raise awareness about the benefits of off-peak travel and encourage discussions at work about what is possible. Those who avoid peak hours save time and are more satisfied and productive. The campaign will be visible on television, in newspapers, magazines, on billboards, and through social media over the next month.
