Two Arrests After Explosion on Gerrit Mannourystraat

Area: Amsterdam

On Friday, January 31, 2025, two Amsterdam residents aged 21 and 23 were arrested in the act following an explosion on Gerrit Mannourystraat in Amsterdam-West. Fortunately, no one was injured, but there was significant damage. The investigation is still looking for witnesses and footage despite the arrests.

On Thursday around 00:15, a neighborhood resident called the police. They reported that a loud explosion had occurred in a hallway on Gerrit Mannourystraat. Officers immediately went to the scene and saw that a hallway, which provides access to several residences, had been destroyed by the explosion. The Explosive Safety Team Leader (TEV) and specialists from the Forensic Investigation (FO) subsequently conducted an investigation. Research shows that an explosive was thrown inside.

Shortly after the explosion, two young men were arrested after a Dangerous Persons Approach (BtGP). They have been detained and will be interrogated. The involvement of the arrested suspects in the explosion will be investigated.

Witness Appeal
The investigation is looking for witnesses who know more about the explosion that occurred on the night of Thursday, January 30, to Friday, January 31, despite the arrests. The police are also urgently seeking footage. Or do you have information about the fleeing suspect(s)? Do you know who the suspects are? The investigation team would like to speak with you.

Explosions
The Amsterdam police unit is familiar with many incidents involving explosive devices. This is concerning, as the danger posed to entrepreneurs, residents, passersby, and emergency responders on site is understandably great. Heavily illegal fireworks, jerrycans with flammable liquids, or homemade explosives do not belong in public spaces – where people work and live – and create life-threatening situations. This must stop. The police are working hard to track down suspects involved in this form of excessive violence. This has already led to multiple arrests, convictions, and substantial prison sentences. But to track down the perpetrators, the police need the help of local residents. After all, they know their neighborhood best. If something seems off in the streetscape, they notice it first. Reporting information to the police is therefore crucial.

Reporting Helps
Do you see suspicious situations? Report it! If you find it scary or intimidating to report, you can always do so anonymously or confidentially. Use Crime Reporting Anonymous or the Criminal Intelligence Team. This is a department trained in shielding informants and tipsters. They are trained to discreetly gather information and to protect the informant at all times.
