In early 2023, households owned over 2.6 trillion euros in assets. The wealthiest 10 percent held 56 percent of this wealth.

In early 2023, the wealthiest 10 percent of households owned nearly 1.5 trillion euros, equating to 56 percent of the total wealth of Dutch households. The remaining 90 percent of households held about 1.2 trillion euros. Some of these households even had negative wealth; the 10 percent with the lowest wealth had combined debts exceeding their assets, resulting in a net negative wealth of 38 billion euros. Additionally, the next two wealth groups had assets around zero.

Almost six out of ten households owned their home in 2023, which is the most important asset for the majority of households. Wealthier households often have other assets as well. For the wealthiest 10 percent, 30 percent of their assets consisted of substantial interests. Within the richest 1 percent, this was 54 percent.

According to CBS, the share of total wealth held by the top 10 percent of households has decreased annually since 2015, from 70 percent in 2015 to 56 percent in 2022. This share remained nearly unchanged in 2023. The share of wealth for the top 1 percent was 32 percent in 2015 and 23 percent in 2022 and 2023, while the top 0.1 percent held 13 percent in 2015 and 10 percent in 2023. This means that 82,000 households with the highest wealth owned approximately 260 billion euros in wealth in 2023.
