This year marks 80 years since the liberation of the Netherlands and the Auschwitz concentration camp. Since 2015, the date of Auschwitzs liberation, January 27, 1945, has been established as an international day of remembrance: The Holocaust Memorial Day. On this date, victims of the Holocaust and other genocides are remembered worldwide. In the Netherlands, there are gatherings that culminate in the national commemoration.
The National Holocaust Remembrance takes place every year in Wertheimpark, Amsterdam, on the last Sunday of January. This year, in addition to Prime Minister Schoof, speakers will include Jacques Grishaver, chairman of the Dutch Auschwitz Committee, and Femke Halsema, the mayor of Amsterdam.
