Police Stops Identification and Registration of Asylum Seekers

Area: Nederland

From 2025, identifying asylum seekers is no longer the polices task, but that of DISA.

DISA takes over the registration of asylum seekers, allowing the police to focus on other duties. The Aliens Police Department (AVIM) will focus again on monitoring and enforcing immigration laws, targeting problematic behavior of foreigners regardless of their residency status.

DISA, a new agency within the Ministry of Asylum and Migration, is responsible for registration. The police will provide support where necessary. This will also lead to changes within the police, especially in Northern Netherlands and Eastern Brabant. Karin Krukkert, police chief in The Hague, finds the transfer a positive step, allowing staff to work on other tasks that are important for society. She notes that the pressure on the police will increase due to more illegal immigrants.

Danny Tanghe of AVIM emphasizes that the police can now focus more on genuine law enforcement work associated with immigration law. They aim to address not just asylum but all migration streams.
