Arrests for choking challenge

Area: Rotterdam

Last week, four minors were arrested for participating in the choking challenge. This involves applying a chokehold until a person loses consciousness. The incident occurred in mid-January at a school in Rotterdam and was reported to the police last week.

A boy briefly lost consciousness due to the choking game but fortunately regained it. He did not need to go to the hospital. This TikTok trend is extremely dangerous. Last week, a 16-year-old boy from Nieuwegein died as a result of this challenge.

The four minors involved are now free. The public prosecutor will decide later how to handle the case. Everyone was very shocked and did not realize the dangers. The police and the Public Prosecution Service urge parents to talk to their children about this challenge and the risks involved.

Damage
According to the Brain Foundation, the brain can be damaged due to lack of oxygen. This can happen after a very short time. The visible and (often) invisible effects can have a long-term negative impact, says the organization.

Crime
The police and the Public Prosecution Service emphasize that this game is not only dangerous but also a crime. Young people need to understand that they can be arrested and prosecuted for it. This can cause significant issues when applying for a Certificate of Good Conduct (VOG) for their dream job.
