Export Value of Dutch Agriculture Increased Again

The Netherlands exported agricultural goods worth 128.9 billion euros in 2024. This is an increase of nearly 5 percent compared to the previous year. Price increases are the main cause, although the volume has also slightly increased. Dairy, eggs, ornamental products, and meat remain the most popular export products. The import of agricultural goods was estimated at 86.1 billion euros in 2024, an increase of 3.2% compared to 2023, according to research by Wageningen Social & Economic Research (WSER) and CBS for the Ministry of LVVN.

“The Dutch agro-food sector is an innovative top sector of global stature. It is high time we proudly promote this important sector again. It is crucial to maintain our strong international position, especially in times of geopolitical challenges.”

Femke Marije Wiersma, Minister LVVN

“We are proud of the farmers, gardeners, and fishermen who work hard every day to provide food for the Netherlands and the world. Food security is not a given. With our Dutch knowledge and expertise, we make an indispensable contribution to global food security.”

Jean Rummenie, Secretary of State Ministry LVVN

Europe main trading partner

The European Union is by far the largest export market for the Netherlands, accounting for 72.2% in 2024. This was 71.1% in 2023. Most agricultural exports in 2024, as in previous years, go to our neighboring countries. A quarter (25%) of the estimated total export goes to Germany. Belgium comes second with 12%.

Two-thirds of the exports are products made in the Netherlands, generating nearly 90% of the export earnings.

Dairy and eggs (12.3 billion euros), ornamental products (11.9 billion euros), meat (10.7 billion euros), cocoa and preparations (9.9 billion euros), and potatoes and vegetables (8.9 billion euros) are the main groups of goods in exports. The top five accounted for nearly 42% of the total export value in 2024.

The report again emphasizes that the Dutch agro-food sector is significant at the international level, characterized by innovative entrepreneurship, knowledge and expertise, and a unique logistical position.
