Conference on Sanction Compliance
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is holding a conference on January 15 about sanction compliance. This event will bring together policymakers, legal experts, financial institutions, and business representatives to discuss how sanctions can be effectively enforced on national, European, and international levels.
Sanctions are vital tools to hold countries, organizations, and individuals accountable. For instance, sanctions against Russia aim to complicate its war against Ukraine and increase pressure to cease aggression. However, the effectiveness of sanctions depends on strict compliance. Therefore, it’s important to continuously assess the enforceability and effectiveness of these measures. This conference serves as a platform for sharing information, insights, and learning from each others experiences, helping the Netherlands and other member states to close any circumvention paths.
Program
The conference will be opened by Minister Veldkamp, who will speak on the importance of enhanced sanction compliance. Also speaking will be the special advisor to Ukrainian President Zelensky, Vladyslav Vlasiuk, the EU sanctions envoy, David O’Sullivan, Finnish Foreign Minister Eline Valtonen, and Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže.
Exhibition
At the conference venue, there will be an exhibition showcasing captured Russian military materials, which despite existing sanctions contain Western components. The exhibition is organized by NAKO, a forensic research institute from Ukraine.
