Avian Influenza Detected in Lunteren

Avian influenza has been detected on a duck farm in Lunteren (municipality of Ede, province of Gelderland). This is likely a highly pathogenic variant. To prevent the further spread of the virus, approximately 3000 ducks are being culled by the NVWA.

Within the 1 kilometer zone of the infected farm, there is 1 other poultry farm currently housing birds. This farm will also be culled. In the 3 kilometer zone, there are 32 other poultry farms, and in the 10 kilometer zone, there are 256 poultry farms.

Transport Ban

A transport ban applies to all birds and eggs from locations with birds. This ban also applies to manure and bedding from birds, as well as other animals and products from poultry farms. Additionally, there are hunting regulations: it is prohibited to hunt ducks in this area (see the Animal Disease Viewer from the RVO).

National Measures

National measures are in effect, such as a ban on visiting bird habitats of at-risk birds unless necessary. At-risk birds include poultry, waterfowl, and ground birds.

In some regions, including the region of the outbreak, a confinement and shielding obligation is in place. Commercially kept birds must be brought indoors, except for pheasants and ornamental waterfowl. For non-commercial at-risk birds, a shielding obligation also applies. More information can be found on the NVWA website: confinement and shielding obligation. There is also a ban on exhibiting poultry and waterfowl.

Tracing Investigation

As part of the outbreak investigation in Lunteren, a tracing investigation is conducted into high-risk contacts. If necessary, additional measures will be taken. These will be reported via an update in this press release and through the online channels of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV).
