Avian Flu Detected in Spijkenisse (ZH)

Avian flu has been detected at a petting zoo in Spijkenisse (South Holland). It is likely a highly pathogenic variant. The NVWA is culling approximately 150 birds to prevent the spread of the virus.

In the 1 and 3 kilometer zones of the infected farm, there are no other poultry farms. In the 10 kilometer zone, there are 3 poultry farms, of which 2 are inactive. The third is an egg dealer without any live poultry, so no transport ban is imposed here.

Transport Ban

The transport ban applies to all birds and eggs from a location with birds, as well as manure and bedding. Hunting ducks is prohibited in this area. Check the current infections and measures on the map in the Disease Viewer from the RVO.

National Measures

There are national measures, including a ban on visiting bird housing for at-risk birds, unless necessary. At-risk birds include chickens and waterfowl.

In some regions, including Spijkenisse, the housing and shielding obligation is in effect. Commercially kept birds must be indoors, except for certain types. For non-commercially kept at-risk birds, the shielding obligation applies. More information can be found on the NVWA website. The exhibition of poultry is also prohibited.

Tracing Investigation

A tracing investigation is being conducted regarding risky contacts in Spijkenisse. If necessary, additional measures will be taken and communicated via the press release and the online channels of the Ministry of LNV.
