Two Persons Arrested for Involvement in Explosions in Kerkrade

Last year, three explosions occurred at a residence on Grachterstraat in Kerkrade. This morning, two individuals were arrested in Riemst (Belgium) on suspicion of involvement in two of the three explosions. The suspects – a 40-year-old man from Maastricht and a 24-year-old woman from Riemst – were apprehended by an arrest team.

In addition to Riemst, a search was also conducted in Maastricht. The searches resulted in the discovery of (heavy) illegal fireworks, various firearms, ammunition, and parts of firearms.

Explosions

The explosions occurred on June 13, November 16, and December 24, 2024, in the late evening at a residence on Grachterstraat in Kerkrade. The last explosion also caused damage to a car. It is unclear why these explosions occurred and why specifically at this residence. The male suspect is in custody in Belgium, and the Public Prosecution Service Limburg (Netherlands) has requested Belgium for extradition.

Investigation

The investigation team is looking into this case. During the time of the explosions, extensive (neighborhood) research was conducted, witnesses were interviewed, and (camera) footage was secured.
