Convicted Hit-and-Run Driver Arrested While Trying to Avoid Sentence

Area: Flevoland

A 50-year-old man was arrested yesterday in Flevoland. He had been sentenced to 300 days in prison for causing a fatal accident and was trying to avoid this sentence. A special police team tracked him down and delivered him to a detention center.

The arrest concludes a process that has been ongoing since 2018. On April 17, 2018, the man caused an accident in Suriname that resulted in the death of a 57-year-old man. After the accident, he drove off without caring for the victim. He then fled to the Netherlands. Surinamese authorities requested prosecution, and on December 5, 2024, he was sentenced in absentia to 10 months in prison.

Arrest
After the verdict, the man did not report to serve his sentence. The Public Prosecution Service instructed the Coordination Execution Tasks Team of the police to locate him. They discovered his residence and arrested him on January 14 in Flevoland. He has now been transferred to a detention center where he will serve his sentence.

Execution Tasks
The Coordination Execution Tasks Team is a special unit that focuses on locating individuals who do not comply with their sentences. This includes convicted individuals who do not report to serve their prison sentences, have outstanding large fines, or do not adhere to their conditional release terms.

Due to privacy concerns, the police cannot provide information about the location of the arrest.
