Avian Influenza Detected in Daarle and Vriezenveen

Avian influenza has been detected in Daarle and Vriezenveen among hobbyists. It is likely a highly pathogenic variant. The NVWA is culling about 550 ornamental waterfowl and chickens to prevent the spread of the virus.

Daarle

In the 1 and 3 kilometer zone of the infected farm, there are no other poultry farms. In the 10 kilometer zone, there are 42 poultry farms. A housing and screening obligation now applies in this zone. Approximately 400 ornamental waterfowl and chickens are present here.

Vriezenveen

In the 1 kilometer zone of the infected farm, there are no other poultry farms. In the 3 kilometer zone, there are 6 other poultry farms that the NVWA is screening for avian influenza. In the 10 kilometer zone, there are 46 poultry farms. A housing and screening obligation now applies in this zone. In Vriezenveen, approximately 150 ornamental waterfowl and chickens are present.

Transportation Ban

A transportation ban applies to all birds and breeding and consumption eggs from a location with birds. The ban also includes manure from birds and used bedding, as well as other animals and animal products from poultry farms. Additionally, there are rules for hunting, such as a ban on hunting ducks or hunting in areas that may disturb waterfowl. Check the current infections and measures on the map in the Disease Viewer from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO).

National Measures

National measures are still in effect, such as a ban on visiting bird habitats of risk birds unless absolutely necessary. Risk birds include kept poultry (like chickens), waterfowl, and ground birds.

In several regions, the housing and screening obligation remains in effect. In these regions, the housing obligation applies to commercially kept birds, which are brought indoors (except pheasants, ornamental waterfowl, and ground birds). For non-commercially kept risk birds (poultry/chickens, (ornamental) waterfowl, and ground birds), such as in zoos, petting farms, and for private bird owners, as well as for commercially kept pheasants, ornamental waterfowl, and ground birds, a screening obligation applies. More information about the housing and screening obligation can be found on the NVWA website at this link. A ban on displaying poultry, waterfowl, and ground birds is also in place.

Tracing Investigation

As usual, a tracing investigation is being conducted regarding the infection at these locations to identify risky contacts. If necessary, additional measures will be taken based on the outcomes of the investigation. These potential additional measures will be communicated through an update in this press release and via the online channels of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV).
