Renewed Dashboard Provides Information on the Sustainability of Most Dutch Supermarkets

On January 28, the renewed Sustainability Dashboard for Supermarkets went live. This website shows how Dutch supermarkets contribute to a sustainable food system. The Ministry of Agriculture and Nature developed this dashboard to provide insight into the role of supermarkets.

All Major Supermarkets in the Netherlands

The previous version of the dashboard was released in March 2024, featuring sustainability data from the 5 largest supermarket chains for 2022. In this new version, almost all major chains have provided data for 2023, gathered by Wageningen Social & Economic Research.

European Legislation on Transparency

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) came into effect in 2024. This means that companies, including supermarkets, are required to report on their impact on people and the environment. The new version of the dashboard includes data from 2023, although supermarkets were not yet required to make this data public at that time. It is encouraging that many supermarkets are already taking steps towards greater transparency.

A More Complete Picture

Thanks to the data from the larger supermarket chains, the dashboard is now more complete and provides better insight into their sustainability efforts. This is measured using indicators such as biodiversity, food waste, labels, and climate. Supermarkets have also added their own targets for organic offerings.

Although not all indicators are complete, the dashboard already provides a good overview. Supermarkets are making good progress in reducing food waste, but more work is needed for protein transition. A new version of the dashboard will be released later this year, with adjustments made where necessary.

Useful for More Research

The data on the dashboard is also useful for other research and can be used by NGOs, policymakers, and journalists. Supermarkets can compare their sustainability performance with others.
