Why are we going on a state visit to Kenya?

The announcement of the state visit has sparked many reactions. People have expressed their concerns about the state visit in light of human rights violations. The Netherlands and Kenya have maintained intensive contacts for over 60 years. This relationship has deepened in recent years in both strategic and economic areas.

The Netherlands and Kenya have much in common: we are both trading nations, regional hubs, and our ports serve as a connecting function with a large hinterland. During the state visit, our mutual interests and what connects us will be central. Meetings will take place with various parts of Kenyan society, such as farmers, young entrepreneurs, civil society organizations, and the business community. As part of a strong and mature relationship between countries, we explore opportunities and equal partnerships, but at the same time, we do not shy away from critical conversations and there is room to discuss difficult topics.

The Netherlands is aware of national developments in Kenya and is thus also conscious of human rights violations. The Netherlands has spoken out on this from the beginning. We continue to monitor the situation and take protests seriously. The Netherlands will engage in discussions about this both publicly and in contacts with Kenyan authorities. After all, when you are in conversation with each other, you can work on solving problems and mutual understanding.
