Avian Influenza Detected in Klarenbeek

Avian influenza has been detected at a duck farm in Klarenbeek (municipality of Voorst, Gelderland). It is likely a highly pathogenic variant. The NVWA is culling about 8,500 animals to prevent further spread of the virus.

There are no other poultry farms within the 1-kilometer zone around the infected farm. Within the 3-kilometer zone, there is one other poultry farm that will be sampled for avian influenza by the NVWA. In the 10-kilometer zone, three poultry farms are subject to a transport ban. The infected farm is located in a region (10) where the housing requirement still applies.

Transport Ban

A transport ban applies to all birds and breeding and consumption eggs from locations with birds. This ban also applies to manure from birds and used bedding, as well as to other animals and animal products from poultry farms. Additionally, there are rules regarding hunting, which prohibit hunting ducks or hunting in areas that may disturb waterfowl. Check the current infections on the map in the Animal Disease Viewer from the Dutch Enterprise Agency (RVO).

National Measures

National measures are still in place, such as a ban on visiting bird habitats of at-risk birds unless absolutely necessary. At-risk birds include kept poultry (such as chickens), waterfowl, and shorebirds.

In several regions, including the one where this infected facility is located, the housing and screening obligation remains in effect. In these regions, the housing requirement applies to commercially kept birds, which must be brought indoors (except for pheasants, ornamental waterfowl, and shorebirds). For non-commercially kept at-risk birds (poultry/chickens, (ornamental) waterfowl, and shorebirds), such as in zoos, petting zoos, and private bird owners, as well as commercially kept pheasants, ornamental waterfowl, and shorebirds, a screening obligation applies. More information about the housing and screening obligation can be found on the NVWA website here. There is also a ban on exhibiting poultry, waterfowl, and shorebirds.

Tracing Research

As part of the investigation into this location, a tracing study is conducted to identify risky contacts. If necessary, additional measures will be taken based on the results of the study. These potential additional measures will be communicated via an update in this news article and through the online channels of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV).
