He is currently an alderman in the municipality of Almelo.
At present, Cees Bijl (PvdA) is the acting mayor of Meppel.

New Mayor in Meppel
Drs. A. (Arjen) Maathuis has been appointed as the mayor of the municipality of Meppel. The appointment will take effect on April 1, 2025.
