Share of Dutch Multinationals in the Economy Decreased

The development of Dutch multinationals lags behind that of foreign multinationals and other companies. The share of Dutch multinationals in GDP decreased from 15% in 2015 to 13% in 2021.

The share of Dutch multinationals in the gross domestic product (GDP) fell from 15% in 2015 to 13% in 2021. Between 2015 and 2022, the number of Dutch multinational enterprises decreased by 2.4%. This is reported by CBS.

In 2021, multinationals accounted for 31% of the GDP, with most coming from foreign multinationals (€145 billion; 18%) and a smaller share from Dutch ones (€102 billion; 13%). Dutch multinationals have subsidiaries abroad, while the parent company of a foreign multinational is located abroad.

In 2022, there were 31,500 multinationals in the Netherlands, of which 11,300 were Dutch and 20,200 foreign. This represents 1.3% of the total number of companies. The total number of companies in the Netherlands has increased by 41.5% since 2015. The number of foreign multinationals grew by 39.4%, while the number of Dutch multinationals decreased by 2.4% compared to 2015.
