Residents of Bonaire who live independently but are unable to participate in general services due to illness or mental health issues can go to Lokèt Aksesibel at Sentro Akseso for personalized assistance starting January 1, 2025. Personalized provisions include options like day care, home care, meal services, and medical aids. Up to 2024, applications were handled through the BCO desk at ZW-group.
Social network first
Not all individuals with conditions living at home are automatically eligible. Evaluations consider a person’s social network, and if running a household independently is not feasible, it is expected that their social network provides support. If this support is inadequate or non-existent, personalized assistance may be provided.
Right to provisions established
Previously, care providers decided whether a person received help. From 2025, legal regulations apply. Sentro Akseso and Zorg en Jeugd Caribisch Nederland (ZJCN) will assess if applications meet these requirements. If so, applicants are entitled to assistance, bringing more clarity and certainty.
Why this new regulation?
The regulation supports individuals with illnesses or disabilities to live independently longer. It focuses on daily living assistance, such as household help or essential tools. This allows individuals to stay in their homes longer, maintain social contacts, and stay active, which also alleviates pressure on care facilities.
How to apply?
Starting in 2025, residents can apply at Lokèt Aksesibel of Sentro Akseso. Applications can be made via phone, online, or in person. Staff members assist with application completion. Sentro Akseso and ZJCN evaluate the applications. Within an agreed timeframe, applicants will learn whether assistance is granted.
