The first quarter of the 21st century is ending. Despite technological progress and poverty reduction, the envisioned cooperative world order is still not realized.
This was the opening message of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in her keynote speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
She highlighted the increased global trade barriers and the challenges of globalization. The President stressed the need for a balance between security and innovation to enhance prosperity.
The EU, as the worlds second-largest economy, with high social and environmental standards, is positioned to address new global challenges. A roadmap to improve productivity, innovation, and competitiveness will be adopted next week.
Key elements include developing capital markets, simplifying business operations, and ensuring secure energy supplies. Efforts will focus on modernizing infrastructure and removing barriers within the EU.
Von der Leyen emphasized Europes commitment to the Paris Agreement and called for unity in managing AIs potential and risks. The EUs recent agreements with Switzerland, Mercosur, and Mexico demonstrate its global engagement.
On China, the EU aims to de-risk while exploring beneficial trade opportunities. Strong transatlantic ties with the US remain crucial, with mutual interests and values at the forefront.
