In accordance with the Treaties, the European Commission members for the 2024-2029 term, led by President von der Leyen, pledged before the European Court of Justice to uphold the Treaties and the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union.
The Court welcomed the College, and its President Koen Lenaerts opened the session, highlighting the Commissions role as Treaties guardian and promoter of the Unions general interest.
Each member, in their native language, vowed to perform their duties independently, avoid conflicts of interest, and act with integrity during and after their mandate.
President von der Leyens speech emphasized the Charters promise: “Our Union stands up for universal rights, freedoms, and dignity of all on this continent,” she stated.
She warned that Europes core principles face challenges from within and outside. “This Court and Commission are guardians of the rule of law, democracy, and social progress,” she said.
The President stressed the focus on Europes competitiveness over the next five years, asserting that Europes unique model is key to its competitiveness: “Our economy thrives when it balances business freedom with worker protection, equality, and judicial independence. Rule of law and environmental protection are our competitive edge.”
She urged her fellow Commissioners to defend the European Union daily: “This is a great responsibility and a beautiful one. Working with you fills me with joy. Lets proceed with responsibility and joy,” she concluded.
