President von der Leyen addresses EU ambassadors at yearly conference

President Ursula von der Leyen addressed the EU Ambassadors Conference yesterday, thanking the EU diplomatic corps and discussing the European Unions foreign policy and diplomatic priorities.

She highlighted the interconnected nature of todays world through trade, supply chains, and digital communication. Von der Leyen acknowledged that the era of hyper-globalisation is outdated, emphasizing a shift towards hyper-competitive geopolitics. She expressed concern over rising global fears, from climate change to AI and migration, affecting international relations.

Von der Leyen stressed that Europe must remain calm and make decisions based on current realities, not nostalgia. She stated, Europes best approach is to stay level-headed and make calculated judgments based on todays interests. She assured that Europe is ready to engage globally where mutual benefits exist.

The EU will continue investing in Global Gateway, strengthening Mediterranean partnerships, and promoting free and fair trade. She announced upcoming visits to India and a summit with South Africa.

She reinforced the strong ties between the EU and the United States, emphasizing cooperation on shared interests. Von der Leyen also discussed the EUs relationship with China, focusing on balancing trade and economic security.

Regarding the Middle East, she noted the fragile return of hope and the EUs humanitarian efforts in the region. The EU is a leading donor and is ready to step up reconstruction efforts.

Europes destiny at stake in Ukraine

Von der Leyen described the war in Ukraine as a crucial crisis for Europe. She warned of Putins ambitions and stressed the need to support Ukraine, highlighting the EUs significant financial and military assistance.

Despite challenges, she concluded with an optimistic message to young diplomats, emphasizing Europes strength and potential to shape a prosperous future.
