This afternoon, the public prosecutor demanded an eight-year prison sentence and TBS with compulsory treatment against a 64-year-old man from Amsterdam, suspected of fatally stabbing a 36-year-old man on October 28, 2023, in Hazelaarstraat, Amsterdam-North. Both the suspect and the victim were drug addicts and were acquaintances. A dispute over a bank card led to the stabbing.

They were part of a group of drug addicts. The victim was staying at the suspects home. On the morning of the stabbing, the suspect, the victim, and a third man were present in the house.

The police investigation shows that the stabbing started in the suspects home. The argument was about a missing bank card, with the suspect assuming that the victim had stolen it.

Chase

The argument escalated on the street. The suspect chased the victim with a large knife. Bystanders attempted to intervene. CCTV footage and witnesses confirm that only the suspect attacked the victim with the knife, inflicting fatal wounds to the neck and heart. The OM considers it murder, as the suspect had time to think.

The suspect was in the Pieter Baan Centrum but refused to undergo an examination. There is no evidence of diminished accountability, so the OM assumes full accountability.

Prison sentence and TBS

The suspect is already known to the judiciary due to previous convictions for property crimes and violence. He has a long-term drug addiction. He was under the influence during the stabbing. The prosecutor emphasized that future violence due to drug use must be prevented. TBS treatment offers the best chance of preventing recidivism. Therefore, the prosecutor demanded eight years in prison and TBS with compulsory treatment.
