This spring, NWO updates the Landscape of Large-Scale Scientific Infrastructure. New large-scale scientific infrastructures and those not yet included in the current Landscape of Large-Scale Scientific Infrastructure (hereafter: Landscape GWI) are invited to register.
Scientific infrastructures already on the Landscape GWI are asked to update their information. Registration and updating can be done by filling out an online inventory form. The deadline for registration and updating is April 10, 2025.
What qualifies as large-scale scientific infrastructure?
Scientific infrastructures include equipment or collections of instruments, archives, collections of scientific data, e-infrastructures, and data infrastructures. Large-scale scientific infrastructures are those that are freely accessible to researchers and have a size of at least 10 million euros in capital investments and operational costs over five years. Any scientific infrastructure that meets the definition for Large-Scale Scientific Infrastructure is included in the Landscape GWI, regardless of funding sources.
Inclusion in the Landscape GWI provides visibility to the scientific infrastructure for potential users. It is also important for policymakers and ministries. The national overview serves as a starting point for making choices and formulating strategies for funding scientific infrastructure. For example, the National Roadmap for Large-Scale Scientific Infrastructure includes a small subset of the Landscape GWI and consists of infrastructure of national importance and the highest priority for scientific breakthroughs. The updated Landscape GWI 2025 forms an important starting point for the new National Roadmap GWI, which will be published in 2026.
