Witnesses sought after excessive violence against police on New Years Eve

On New Years Eve, police officers were assaulted at Stationsplein in Amsterdam. They were severely attacked, leading to a warning shot. Four suspects were arrested.

At around 01:35, two plainclothes officers witness a fight. A group attacks two individuals at the tram stops on the west side of Central Station. The officers request assistance, but the group turns against them.

Excessive violence
The officers are punched and kicked, falling to the ground. The violence continues while they are down. One officer is kicked in the head, but they manage to get back up.

Warning shots
When attempting to apprehend the suspects, they turn their aggression back on the officers, leading to a warning shot. With help from colleagues, four of the five suspects are arrested.

Identity of assaulted individuals
The identities of the two victims at the tram stop are unknown. The police would like to speak with them.

Violence against police and emergency workers
The police consider violence against their staff unacceptable. Officers play an important role and must be able to work without obstruction. Violence in any form is not tolerated against all police staff.
