Persistent Concerns about Young Adults Mental Health Despite Slight Improvement

Only half of young adults (51%) consider their mental health to be (very) good, while 35% rate it as moderate and 14% as (very) poor. Young people struggling financially, those living alone, and those aged 21 to 25 report worse mental health.

Stress and Pressure

Over two-fifths of young adults frequently feel stressed, primarily due to school and work-related pressures. Additionally, more than half experience regular performance pressure and are concerned about societal issues, particularly the housing market and rising prices. Less than half have a lot of confidence in their future, while 15% have little to no confidence.

Slight Improvement Since 2022

Since the 2022 survey, there has been slight improvement in several areas of mental health, including loneliness, happiness, life satisfaction, and feelings of being limited by psychological issues. Despite these slight improvements, there is still much work to be done, and the mental health of young adults requires ongoing attention.

About the Young Adults Health Monitor 2024

From April to July 2024, all municipal health services (GGD) collaborated with RIVM and GGD GHOR Nederland to conduct a study among 16 to 25-year-olds in the Netherlands. Over 135,000 young adults filled out a questionnaire about their health, well-being, and lifestyle. More information about the study can be found at monitorgezondheid.nl. In addition to the results described above, many other topics were also covered in this research. For more results, visit VZinfo.nl (external link) or view the national report (external link). This research is part of the Health Research COVID-19 project from the Health Research Network during Disasters (RIVM, GGD, GGD GHOR Nederland, Nivel, and ARQ) commissioned by the Ministry of VWS Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport) and ZonMw Health Research Netherlands & Medical Sciences (Health Research Netherlands & Medical Sciences).
