The Bosbaan: the most beautiful view of Amsterdam

In 2026, the World Rowing Championships will take place at the Bosbaan. Preparations are necessary to renovate the Bosbaan and its surroundings. Work will start in January 2025 and last until mid-2026. This is a brief overview of the history of this beautiful place.

There was no forest near Amsterdam in the past. The area mainly consisted of meadows. In the 19th century, Vondelpark was created for some greenery. Around 1900, the city grew and the idea for a real forest emerged: the ‘Boschplan’, which includes the Bosbaan. In 1928, the city council decided to create it in English style.

Labor Relief

The Bosbaan was created by unemployed people during the economic crisis of 1929. These people worked under harsh conditions, and the project lasted from 1934 to 1937. About 20,000 people contributed to this effort.

Jewish Labor Camps

During World War II, Jewish men were also forced to work on the Bosbaan. Many were later deported.

Activities

After completion, many rowing competitions were held. The Bosbaan is now popular for swimming, fishing, and skating.

World Championships

The Bosbaan has been prepared for international competitions and has been widened twice. In 2026, the World Rowing Championships will be held for the third time at the Bosbaan.

A Jewel for the City
