3 Years of War: The Netherlands Continues to Support Ukraine

On February 24, 2022, Russia began its large-scale invasion of Ukraine. For 3 years, Ukrainians have been fighting for their freedom and their lives. In this article: why support for Ukraine remains important – for the Netherlands and all of Europe.

The Netherlands Continues to Support Ukraine:

For the Ukrainians

Russia has devastated the lives of millions of Ukrainians – and completely destroyed Ukrainian villages and cities. In areas occupied by Russia, Ukrainians suffer under the violence of Russian soldiers. They murder, torture, rape, and kidnap Ukrainian children. With support for Ukraine, Ukrainians have stood against Russia for 3 years.

For the safety of the Netherlands and Europe

Russian aggression goes beyond Ukraine. President Putin publicly speaks about a conflict with ‘the West’. And Russia is increasingly doing more to weaken European countries. Consider cyberattacks, spreading fake news, sabotage, and influencing elections.

In short: by defending against Russia, Ukraine is fighting for the safety of all of Europe. This makes it important to support Ukraine. Because if Russia is successful in Ukraine, the danger won’t stop there. And the costs for the Netherlands will become much higher. Think of even more Russian (cyber)attacks in Europe and more Ukrainian refugees who cannot return home.

For a world where aggression does not pay off

A Russian victory would have consequences for the whole world. It would send a signal to Russia – and for example to China, North Korea, and Iran – that aggression pays off. And that the law of the strongest is more important than international rules and agreements. This could signal the beginning of many more wars.

Therefore, it is important that Ukraine holds its ground, and that the aggression costs Russia dearly. That is why the cabinet continues to support Ukraine unwaveringly. To contribute to a positive outcome of the war: peace through showing strength. Instead of risking more war by showing weakness.

Dutch Support for Ukraine

The Netherlands continues to support Ukraine. Among other things with:

  • Military supportequipment such as ammunition, F-16s, and air defense systems. The Netherlands is also providing training to Ukrainian soldiers.
  • Sanctions against Russia: the sanctions from EU countries are hitting the Russian economy. This makes it increasingly difficult and expensive for Russia to sustain the war.
  • Justice for Ukraine: ensuring that war crimes do not go unpunished and that those who have suffered from the war receive compensation.
  • Reconstruction: support to repair damage where it is most needed, such as to water systems, roads, hospitals, or electricity networks. This support is crucial to keep Ukraine afloat.
  • Humanitarian aid: supporting international, Dutch, and Ukrainian organizations in delivering aid supplies, ensuring clean water, medicine, food, and protection. And helping civilian victims.
  • Protection of Ukrainian culture: Russia is attacking cultural sites in Ukraine, in an attempt to erase Ukrainian culture and identity. The Netherlands supports Ukraine in protecting its cultural heritage.
  • Other support: The Netherlands also helps Ukraine, for example, with support for healthcare, psychosocial support for victims, protection against cyberattacks, and support for agriculture.
