Caroline Katsman becomes scientific figurehead for KIN in climate research

Caroline Katsman will lead KINs climate research, enhancing collaboration with scientists and society.

Professor Caroline Katsman was appointed on December 15, 2024, as the scientific figurehead for the Climate Research Initiative Netherlands (KIN). As an esteemed climate scientist, Katsman brings a vast network and extensive experience to address pressing societal issues using physical climate science. Alongside Professor Derk Loorbach, she will guide KINs scientific projects, collaborating with General Director Michiel van den Hout.

Katsman, active with KIN since its founding, focuses on linking fundamental climate research with KINs activities and external stakeholders. From 2025, she will chair university climate center meetings and help develop KINs strategic partnerships. KIN aims to expedite climate transitions by integrating science with social and business partners, with Katsman anchoring KINs scientific pillars. She will dedicate one day per week to KIN.

As a climate scientist, I am aware of significant climate changes and challenges. Its clear that translating hard data into policy that advances sustainable society requires more. I support KINs bold and innovative approach.

Ocean Vortices Research

Katsman, affiliated with the Delft University of Technology and guest researcher at Utrecht University, investigates large-scale ocean circulation. Her work contributed to sea level rise scenarios for coastal defense strategies. Her research on ocean vortices impact on climate change earned a 2013 NWO Vidi grant.

Katsman: Climate transition requires more than just hard numbers; it needs action-oriented policies. KIN enables this, and I am glad to be part of this innovative approach.

General Director Michiel van den Hout emphasizes Katsmans invaluable experience for expanding KINs reach. Together with Loorbach, they set the scientific direction for KIN.

About KIN

KIN accelerates climate transitions for a sustainable society by 2050, facilitated by NWO and KNAW. KIN encourages collaboration across research, policy, business, and societal organizations, offering programs and events worldwide.
