Navy escorts Russian task group of 6 ships in the North Sea

The Royal Navy escorted 6 Russian ships in the North Sea this weekend. This includes 3 naval ships and 3 civilian ships. They are part of a task group heading from the Mediterranean to a Russian port.

These include the landing ships Alexandr Otrakovsky (Ropucha-class) and Ivan Gren (Ivan Gren-class), the supply ship Yelnya (Altay-class), the oil tanker General Skobelev, and the transport ships Sparta and Sparta II.

The 6 ships were guided through the so-called Dutch Exclusive Economic Zone. After the passage, other NATO partners took over the escort. The navy deployed HNLMS Johan de Witt for the escort. The maritime helicopter NH90 was also used.

Right of Passage

Russian units frequently navigate through the Dutch Exclusive Economic Zone. There is an internationally agreed right of passage here. Nevertheless, the Netherlands escorts such fleet formations. This is not only to remain vigilant but also to intervene in case of suspicious actions or disturbances. Defence thus protects critical underwater infrastructure.
