During the press moment at the The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies (HCSS), the ministers agreed on support for Ukraine and the strengthening of NATO on the eastern flank. The Russian threat is particularly palpable in the Baltic States.
Estonian Minister Pevkur stated that support for Ukraine also helps the eastern countries. “Otherwise, Russia will simply move its troops.” He emphasized that the NATO standard of 2% is insufficient.
Latvian Minister Sprūds advocates closer cooperation with the EU. “The EU must strengthen the defense industry. Do not forget that Ukraine is also fighting for us.”
Personal Story
Lithuanian Minister Šakalienė shared during the HCSS meeting about her uncle who was imprisoned in Siberia. “He spread leaflets saying ‘Lithuania is free’. He was captured and tortured. Russia shows no mercy. We must prepare well, as deterrence is our best defense.”
The ministers expressed gratitude for the Netherlands efforts. The air force operates F-35s from Estonia, and the army has had troops in Lithuania since 2017. The navy also ensures that important infrastructure in the Baltic Sea is protected.
They agreed that the Netherlands contributes to the security of the Baltic countries and NATO.
Important Year
Minister Brekelmans stated: “Our borders are also yours. 2025 is crucial, not only for Ukraine but also for the Baltic defense line, NATO, and the EU.” He expressed his unwavering support. “We must strengthen our collective defense.”
