Sybren van der Velden Walda, project leader Seniors and Safety, says that fake police officers exploit the trust in the police. This leads to financial damage and loss of trust. This is unacceptable.
Refined Tricks
Fake police officers use clever tricks and stolen data to call the elderly, usually those over 70. They impersonate officers and warn about burglaries. They offer to temporarily store valuable items. Often, young boys come to collect these items and also try to steal bank cards. They sometimes wear something resembling a police uniform. Van der Velden Walda says: They exploit the respect that elderly people have for authority. Victims feel pressured to act quickly.
Prevention and Investigation
Combating fake police officers is a high priority. The police focus on education and investigation. Thanks to an information table, suspects are recognized more quickly. In 2024, we made twice as many arrests as in 2023, says Van der Velden Walda. We also want to target the organizers of these networks.
Keep Reporting: ‘You’re a Hero if You Speak Up’
The police urge victims to always report incidents. Every report helps us, says Van der Velden Walda. Family members are also encouraged to warn the elderly. Police officers never come to collect items. If in doubt, call 112 immediately.
A Matter of Persistence
With education, investigation, and an alert society, the police hope to stop fake police officers. We are on top of this, says Van der Velden Walda. But it’s a matter of persistence. Always report attempts of fraud.
