The House of Representatives will debate the governments response to the report Blind for People and Law by the Parliamentary Inquiry Committee on Fraud Policy and Services on January 15. The debate can be followed live from 10.15 a.m. via the website and the Debat Direct app, with live subtitles.

Attending the debate are Sandra Palmen, Secretary of Finance, Eddy van Hijum, Minister of Social Affairs and Employment, Judith Uitermark, Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, and Teun Struycken, Secretary of Justice and Security.

Background

The Parliamentary Inquiry Committee on Fraud Policy and Services was established on February 3, 2022, following two earlier parliamentary investigations into fraud prevention and executive organizations. These included investigations into the childcare benefits scandal and the functioning of government agencies such as the CBR, Tax Administration, and UWV.

Blind for People and Law

On February 26, 2024, Committee Chair Michiel van Nispen presented the report Blind for People and Law to Speaker Martin Bosma. The report includes key findings, conclusions, and six recommendations based on public hearings held in September and October 2023.

Debates

A debate on the report took place on April 23, between the House and the committee, followed by questions answered on April 25. The government responded with a reaction outlining next steps.

What is a parliamentary inquiry?

A parliamentary inquiry is a serious tool used by the House to investigate major issues and scandals, identifying who was responsible and how to prevent future problems.

Witnesses under oath

Witnesses, including ministers and secretaries, are required to testify under oath during inquiries. This means they are legally obliged to tell the truth.
