The House of Representatives will debate on Wednesday, March 12, about amending several laws to further improve the process from donation to transplantation of body material. This includes the Safety and Quality of Body Material Act and the Organ Donation Act. Follow the plenary debate live from 6:30 PM via this website and Debat Direct.
The bill was submitted in March 2024 by Pia Dijkstra, then Minister for Medical Care. Minister Fleur Agema of Health, Welfare, and Sport will attend the plenary debate in the House.
Protection of Donor and Recipient
The aim of the amendments is to update quality and safety guarantees in the entire process from donation to transplantation of body material. These guarantees protect both the recipient and the donor. The risks of a medical treatment with body material should be as minimal as possible for both.
Prohibitions
The legislation prohibits transplants outside the system set up for this purpose and includes provisions to combat illegal trade in organs, for example.
