On January 17, 2025, Rijkswaterstaat and contractor SWARCO signed the maintenance contract for the King Willem-Alexander Tunnel (KWA) in Maastricht and the Salland-Twente Tunnel (STT) in Nijverdal. Martin Klop from SWARCO stated that they are responsible for ensuring smooth operations over the next five years. Nick Könitzer from Rijkswaterstaat expressed confidence in the collaboration with SWARCO.
The contract includes both fixed and variable maintenance to keep the tunnels in excellent condition. Measures include replacing lights, cameras, and fire extinguishers, and repairing asphalt and tunnel walls. The King Willem-Alexander Tunnel, a double-layered tunnel in Maastricht, opened in 2016 and improved local traffic flow. The Salland-Twente Tunnel, a combined road and rail tunnel in Nijverdal, opened in stages between 2013 and 2015.
