Retail turnover increases by nearly 4 percent in January

The retail sector achieved a turnover increase of 3.8 percent in January compared to January 2024, reports CBS. The sales volume was 2.0 percent higher. The turnover of the non-food sector (including non-store retail) grew by 2.9 percent, and the food sector (stores in food and beverages) by 5.3 percent. Online sales were 5.1 percent higher than a year earlier.

The retail sector achieved a turnover increase of 3.8 percent in January compared to January 2024, reports CBS. The sales volume was 2.0 percent higher. The turnover of the non-food sector (including non-store retail) grew by 2.9 percent, and the food sector (stores in food and beverages) by 5.3 percent. Online sales were 5.1 percent higher than a year earlier.

The turnover figures are adjusted for the composition of shopping days in January. More is sold on some days of the week than on others. Without this adjustment, retail turnover would have been 5.3 percent higher than in January 2024.

The turnover of the non-food sector (including non-store retail) grew by 2.9 percent in January 2025. The volume (turnover corrected for price changes) was 2.8 percent higher than a year earlier. Drugstores, shoe and leather goods stores, do-it-yourself stores (including kitchens and floors), recreational goods stores, and clothing stores had higher sales in January than in January 2024. In contrast, furniture and home furnishings stores and consumer electronics stores had lower sales in January.

Stores in food and beverages achieved a turnover increase of 5.3 percent in January compared to January 2024. The sales volume was 0.5 percent higher than a year earlier. Supermarket turnover was 4.9 percent higher, while specialty stores saw an increase of 8.0 percent.

Online sales were 5.1 percent higher in January than in January 2024. Online-only retailers (whose main activity is selling via the internet) increased their sales by 7.9 percent. The online turnover of stores where online sales are a secondary activity (multichannelers) was 1.0 percent higher.

The online turnover of stores in food and drugstores, stores in other non-food items, consumer electronics stores, and clothing stores was higher in January 2025 than in January 2024.
