We ended 2024 with a new mayor and a renovated Erasmus Bridge. What else will change for Rotterdam residents in 2025? Here’s a look at some developments and events.
Zero-Emission Zone
The zero-emission zone was implemented on January 1. Within this area, all commercial delivery vans and trucks must be emission-free, meaning they have to be electric or hydrogen-powered. Until April 30, drivers entering this zone without compliance will receive a warning instead of a fine. Starting May 1, fines will be enforced.
30 km/h Speed Limit
This year, the maximum speed limit will decrease to 30 kilometers per hour in more areas of Rotterdam, affecting 115 streets due to high traffic accidents.
Affordable Rent
On July 1, 2024, the Affordable Rent Act took effect to ensure more affordable housing options. The municipality will enforce compliance from January 1, 2025.
Animal Shelter
After years, Rotterdam is set to open a shelter for animals in 2025, with the new facility debuting on January 13.
The HER
The waste parks in Delfshaven and Hillegersberg-Schiebroek will close this spring, making way for a circular center in Overschie.
Nelson Mandelapark
This year, Maashaven will transform into Nelson Mandelapark, beginning at the start of the year.
Hofplein
Hofplein will be converted into a city park starting April 14, with completion aimed in three years.
City Projects
The new Hofplein and Nelson Mandelapark are amongst seven city projects aimed at enhancing Rotterdams green spaces.
Opening in 2025
Various new establishments will open this year, including FENIX museum and Portlantis.
