(Former) students who studied in higher education in the Netherlands under the loan system for one or more years did not receive a basic grant during that time. Therefore, they may have had to borrow extra from DUO. To support these students, they will receive financial assistance.
There are two types of financial support available for students who studied under the loan system (from September 2015 to August 2023): the missed basic grant compensation and the study voucher compensation. One of the requirements to qualify is that the student must have obtained a (final) diploma.
Missed Basic Grant Compensation
If they meet the requirements, (former) students will receive the missed basic grant compensation, which amounts to €34.17 per month. This amount will be deducted from any student debt or paid out if there is no student debt.
Study Voucher Compensation
(Former) students who first received student financing in the first four years of the loan system are also entitled to the study voucher compensation in addition to the missed basic grant compensation. This is a one-time amount of €2,098. This amount will also be deducted from any student debt or paid out if there is no student debt.
Personal Notification or Self-Application
Former students who meet the requirements will receive a personal notification in January if DUO has their details. Students who graduate later will receive notification after their diploma has been provided by the educational institution.
Students who did not use student financing or the student travel product must apply for the missed basic grant compensation themselves.
