E-waste Race Starts: Primary School Students Collect Electronic Waste

Kick-off of the E-waste Race on February 27 with alderman Jesse Luijendijk at group 7/8 of Primary School De Kameleon.

Dont throw away old or broken electronic devices in the container, but hand them in separately at the recycling point or have them picked up during the E-waste Race. This is better for the environment, as harmful substances are not released and fewer raw materials are wasted. Primary school students will help collect as much electronic waste as possible in March.

Often, there is still a lot of electronic waste in residual + PMD waste. This is unfortunate, as the residual waste is burned and valuable materials are lost. Eight primary schools in Almere are therefore competing to get as much electronic waste out of the residual waste as possible.

The Race

The primary schools will participate in the E-waste Race from March 3, 2025, to March 27, 2025. Children will collect small electronic waste and try to give away, for example, phone chargers via Marktplaats. The more waste is collected and reused, the more points the students earn. The school with the most points wins a school trip to Nemo and a lesson at the Upcycle Center!

Electronic waste includes broken or old devices with a plug or a place for a battery. This includes an old keyboard, a broken kettle or phone, but also old or broken cables and adapters. Residents can hand in electronic devices at one of the recycling points. Ink cartridges, loose batteries, and loose accumulators also do not belong in the residual + PMD waste and should go to the recycling point. Batteries can also be handed in at many hardware stores and supermarkets.

Help Out

Residents living near one of the schools can have electronic waste picked up for free between March 3 and March 27, 2025. Waste can be registered via ewasterace.nl. Or bring e-waste to one of the recycling points.

The following schools in Almere are participating: De Kameleon, OBS de Vuurvogel, OBS het Meesterwerk, De Optimist, BS Al Iman, BS De Driemaster, Het Spectrum, and De Olivijn.

The E-waste Race Almere 2025 is made possible by the municipality of Almere, Stad & Natuur Almere, Stichting Open, and Weee Nederland.
