Tits Bongers was appointed honorary citizen of Eindhoven on January 23. During the New Year reception of Stichting Lichtjesroute, he received the honorary medal from the city, as a sign of great appreciation for his commitment to the city. This award was presented on behalf of the city council by Mayor Dijsselbloem.
40 years of Lichtjesroute
For the 40th anniversary of liberation in 1984, Tits Bongers, together with others, ensured that the Lichtjesroute was revived after 14 years of absence. This was such a success that the route still exists today and attracts over 200,000 visitors each year. Tits Bongers has been one of the key figures for over 40 years. “The oil in the machine of the Lichtjesroute,” as the foundations board describes him. He also supports other events, such as: Boeremoeske, GLOW, the Valkenswaard Freedom Route, the annual Indië commemoration, and the Eindhoven carnival.
Pride
The Lichtjesroute is iconic for Eindhoven. An event that connects and makes the people of Eindhoven proud. An event for everyone: young and old, people from Eindhoven and those from afar. “It is Eindhoven at its best, partly thanks to Tits,” said Mayor Dijsselbloem while pinning the honorary medal.
Honorary Citizenship
Tits Bongers is the 68th honorary citizen of Eindhoven. The honorary medal is the highest distinction Eindhoven has. The city council awards this distinction in gratitude for exceptional contributions to the Eindhoven community. Recipients of the honorary medal may call themselves honorary citizens of the city.
