Bird flu detected on poultry farm in Schore

Bird flu has been detected on a laying poultry farm in Schore, Zeeland. This is likely a dangerous variant. The NVWA is culling about 76,000 chickens to prevent spread.

In the 1 kilometer zone around the infected farm, there is 1 vacant farm. There are no other poultry farms in the 3 kilometer zone. In the 10 kilometer zone, there are 5 poultry farms under transport bans.

Transport Ban

A transport ban applies to all birds and breeding and consumption eggs from a location with birds. The ban also includes manure from birds and used bedding, as well as other animals and animal products from poultry farms. Additionally, hunting regulations apply; for instance, hunting ducks or hunting in areas that could disturb waterfowl is prohibited. In the region where this infected farm is located (region 15), there has been a general confinement and shielding obligation since October last year (see the Animal Disease Viewer of the RVO).

National Measures

National measures are still in effect, such as a ban on visiting bird habitats of at-risk birds unless absolutely necessary. At-risk birds include kept poultry (like chickens), waterfowl, and shorebirds.

In some regions, including the one where this infected facility is located, the confinement and shielding obligation remains in effect. In these areas, the confinement obligation applies to commercially kept birds, which are brought indoors (except for pheasants, ornamental waterfowl, and shorebirds). For non-commercially kept at-risk birds (poultry/chickens, (ornamental) waterfowl, and shorebirds), such as in zoos, petting farms, and private bird owners, and for commercially kept pheasants, ornamental waterfowl, and shorebirds, a shielding obligation is in place. More information about the confinement and shielding obligation can be found on the NVWA website here. There is also a ban on exhibiting poultry, waterfowl, and shorebirds.

Tracing Investigation

As part of the infection at the location in Schore, a tracing investigation is being conducted into high-risk contacts, as usual. If necessary, additional measures will be taken based on the investigation results. These potential additional measures will be communicated via an update in this press release and through the online channels of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV).
