On Tuesday, February 25, 2025, the February Strike of 1941 will be commemorated in Amsterdam at the Dokwerker. The commemoration is publicly accessible.
The February Strike of 1941 made a significant impact both nationally and internationally. It was the only general political strike in Europe against the anti-Jewish measures of the Nazis in occupied territory. Many tens of thousands of citizens downed their tools and stood up for the persecuted Jewish population. The strike in Amsterdam had immediate consequences in other places. Strikes also occurred in the Zaanstreek, Kennemerland, Utrecht, Hilversum, and Weesp. For many Dutch people, the February Strike was a source of inspiration.
City Coat of Arms
As a token of recognition and appreciation, Queen Wilhelmina granted the municipality of Amsterdam the motto Heroic, Determined, Compassionate in 1946. This has since been added to the city coat of arms. The February Strike still holds significant meaning today.
Flowers
The organization requests everyone to bring a small bouquet, a single flower, or a small-scale alternative, keeping sustainability in mind. Florists or individuals can deliver this on the day itself at the Jonas Daniel Meijerplein.
