The bicycle parking at Jaarbeursplein will reopen from Friday, February 28, 2025, at 7:00 AM. The conducted research shows that the parking is safe to use. Last October, the parking was closed as a precaution after cracks were discovered in the structure. The temporary parking at Jaarbeursplein will be removed. From February 28, bicycles can no longer be parked there. Bicycles already parked can be collected until Monday, March 3, 2025.
In the past period, the observed cracks have been assessed by experts in concrete structures. The research shows that the cracks have no impact on structural safety. The deck above will open later when local reinforcements have been applied in the parking. These reinforcements do not hinder safe use of the parking, and it can remain open during the work. The expectation is that the barriers on the City Plateau will be removed in the second quarter of 2025.
Schedule
The period until the reopening on February 28 is needed to arrange staffing and clean the parking. Simultaneously, work is being done on dismantling the pop-up parking at Jaarbeursplein. Bicycles parked there can be collected until March 3. After that, they will be moved to the Fietspunt at Koningin Wilhelminalaan 2a, where they can be picked up for free until Tuesday, May 6, after making a phone appointment; opening hours and phone number of Fietspunt can be found at fietsverwijderd.nl.
The opening hours of Knoop bicycle parking will return to normal after the reopening of Jaarbeursplein parking; it will no longer be open 24 hours a day from February 28.
In Knoop bicycle parking, the old number of public transport bicycles will be available again. Travelers can also rent public transport bicycles at Jaarbeursplein bicycle parking again.
Travelers will be informed about the reopening of Jaarbeursplein bicycle parking through text carts, signs, and the websites of the municipality and NS.
Further investigation
During the investigation into the cracks, a layer of water was found under the stones of the City Plateau. In the short term, this poses no risk and has no impact on the structure. However, over a period of decades, this water could potentially weaken the structure of the bicycle parking. This is because the water affects the reinforcement steel in the concrete under the stones. It is not yet clear how this problem can be structurally solved. The municipality will further investigate this in the coming months. This investigation has no impact on the use of the bicycle parking.
