Financial Contribution for Maritime Research by Students and Volunteers

The Cultural Heritage Agency (RCE) invites volunteers and students to participate in the sixth edition of the ‘13 Provinces’ project. With this project, the RCE aims to promote maritime research and capture the variety of stories from the twelve provinces of the Netherlands and the North Sea, bringing maritime history to the forefront.

This project encourages citizen initiative and participation to become a natural part of heritage practice. Volunteers and students often possess significant local maritime knowledge. By allowing them to conduct research on a self-chosen topic, knowledge exchange occurs, inspiring all involved. Stories from previous editions are included in MaSS, highlighting the rich maritime narratives of the Netherlands.

Participation Conditions

  • The research must have a maritime connection;
  • A research proposal must be submitted using a provided format. The proposal should include:
    • a personal justification for the research choice;
    • a budget for receiving the financial contribution (max. €1,500,-)
  • The proposal must be received by March 7, 2025.

Results

The initial research results from all participants will be presented during a special event organized by the RCE. The findings will be published on the MaSS website. Research can also be included in the publication Maritime Locations 3, issued by the LWAOW. The RCE offers support in developing research results.

Judging

The selection for project admission will be conducted by a yet-to-be-determined jury evaluating the submissions. Participants will receive feedback on their proposal by March 21, 2025. The assessment will focus on the number of submitted proposals and their distribution across the ‘13 Provinces’.

Participation

If you are a volunteer or student and interested, request the format for the research proposal by emailing Liselore Muis at l.muis@cultureelerfgoed.nl.
