Trams and metros in Rotterdam run on electricity, and not all of it is needed at all times. The excess energy is now used for other purposes. RET is the first public transport company in Europe allowed to provide this surplus energy to others. In Hoek van Holland, this energy powers an electric excavator for a nature redevelopment project. This machine, connected to the metros overhead lines, does not emit pollutants.
The project is the first to utilize RETs excess electricity, likened to the longest extension cord of Rotterdam. The project supports the city’s goal of reducing grid congestion and promoting clean air. The area, once a military camping site, is being transformed into a nature reserve.
The municipality insists on emission-free methods, aligning with Rotterdams vision for a healthy city. The project near a Natura 2000 area highlights the importance of reducing emissions. RETs partnership with the city aims to expand the use of their network for sustainable energy solutions.
