Consumer goods and services were 3.3 percent more expensive in January than a year earlier, reports CBS. In December, inflation was 4.1 percent. The inflation figure for January is the same as the rapid estimate published on February 3.

The inflation is measured monthly as the development of the consumer price index (CPI) compared to the same month in the previous year. The CPI also provides insight into price development compared to a month earlier. Compared to December 2024, prices for consumers fell by 0.2 percent in January 2025.

Energy prices, which decreased by 4.0 percent compared to a year earlier, have significantly impacted inflation. In December 2024, energy prices were still 0.5 percent higher than in the same month of the previous year.

Price developments in the short term

The CPI not only provides insight into the price development compared to a year ago (inflation) but also compared to the previous month. In January 2025, consumer prices fell by 0.2 percent compared to December 2024.
