EU provides €235 million humanitarian aid to Syrians

The European Commission offers €235 million in new humanitarian support for Syrians in and outside Syria in 2025. Following the fall of the former government in Damascus, the EU is working hard to deliver aid, such as through the Humanitarian Air Bridge.

Commissioner for Preparedness and Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib visits Syria to confirm the EUs commitment to essential assistance. This is the first visit by an EU Commissioner since the fall of the Assad regime.

This EU funding provides emergency aid, including food, medical care, protection, shelter, and access to clean water. Cash transfers and educational support are also part of the package.

Lahbib meets with representatives of the transitional government and EU partners to discuss urgent humanitarian issues. She will also advocate for compliance with international humanitarian law and unrestricted access to all of Syria.

The Commissioner will then travel to Jordan to meet with local authorities and heads of UN agencies. She will also visit Syrian refugees at an EU aid project.

Background

Over the past 13 years, the EU has mobilized over €33.3 billion for aid to the Syrian crisis, both within Syria and in the region.

More than 13 years after the start of the crisis, half of the population is displaced. The number of people needing aid continues to rise, reaching 16.7 million in 2024.

As a leading donor, the EU has provided consistent funding since the crisis began. The EU also funds aid in countries hosting millions of Syrian refugees.

In 2024, the EU provided €5.5 million in emergency aid for those crossing from Lebanon. An additional €4 million was allocated for urgent needs of people entering Syria.
